Why? Because as a society we all strive for education and/or wealth with more inclination towards material wealth and for someone to commit a crime (more so this kind) despite having such a lofty status brings up anger and the 'what more does s/he want?' question. The media these days is just really terrible it's ridiculous. The shallow coverage is very disturbing. It speaks to the ignorance of humans (yet again) and the willingness to label anything one doesn't understand as 'the other'.
