The “Relationship status” update is one of the popular features of Facebook. The feature, when updated, is usually greeted with a flurry of comments depending on a user’s popularity.
In an environment hostile to homosexuality, a same-sex relationship status on Facebook is bound to raise some eyebrows and the comments are sure to be greeted with skepticisms.
The group, on its Tumblr account says that “We are a group of people who believe that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and should be accorded full human rights, irrespective of their sexuality.” With this, it staged the initiative to further heighten the conversation around the anti-gay law.
It continues, “Anyone can be a part of this initiative. It only requires that you have a same sex friend who will be willing to be “in a relationship” with you on Facebook. The two of you will then change your Facebook Cover Displays and Profile Pictures with the posters…. ”
Interestingly, majority of those who have participated in this initiative are heterosexual males and females who feel the need to express their concern for the plight of homosexual citizens.
Some of the participants are prominent social media personalities, who changed their Facebook Cover Displays and Profile pictures with the posters created for the campaign. The posters read, “I am going #gaytoday today because my relationship is my business. Stop Homosexual Discrimination.”
As the outcry continues, this stunt particularly strikes a chord for its use of a well-known Facebook feature and a provocation of discussion.
